Cloudflare postponed AI Search billing to December 1

Cloudflare pushed AI Search billing from November 1, 2026 to December 1, 2026. You won't be charged before December 1, and pricing and included usage are unchanged. If you flipped AI Search on while it was free, put December 1 on the calendar and check your sync interval. The default is no longer what you may have assumed.

What Cloudflare changed

Two things landed in the 2 November 2026 changelog:

  1. Billing start. AI Search billing begins on December 1, 2026, not November 1. No charges before that date.
  2. Default sync interval. New default is 24 hours, down from 6 hours. You can still pick any supported interval from 15 minutes to 24 hours in instance settings or via the sync_interval API field.

Rates and included usage did not change. Cloudflare points to its Limits & pricing docs for the current numbers. Don't treat "postponed" as "cheaper" or "unlimited forever."

Why founders should care

A lot of early teams turned on AI Search during the free window to index docs, help articles, or a product knowledge base for an agent or chat UI. That was rational. Free periods are for learning the product, not for pretending the bill never arrives.

Two practical risks show up when the free period ends:

You forget the date. December 1 is a Monday. If AI Search is in a critical path (support bot, docs search on your marketing site, an agent tool that depends on fresh index content), a surprise charge or a sudden need to trim usage is an avoidable fire. Put a reminder a week earlier and decide whether to keep the instance, lower sync frequency, or cut scope.

You assumed near-real-time indexing. A 6-hour default already wasn't real-time. A 24-hour default is overnight freshness. If your go-to-market depends on "we shipped a pricing change and the bot knows it by lunch," verify the interval on every instance. Cloudflare still lets you set 15 minutes when you need it. You just have to set it.

What to check this week

Open each AI Search instance and write down:

  • Sync interval (15 min through 24 h)
  • What sources are indexed (and how often those sources change)
  • Whether the feature is still on the critical path for a customer-facing flow

If the content changes once a week, 24 hours is fine and cheaper to reason about. If you're feeding an agent that answers from yesterday's changelog, set the interval deliberately and budget the AI feature like any other usage line.

For founders building agent-facing surfaces, treat search and retrieval cost the same way you treat model tokens: know the unit, know when it starts billing, and keep it out of a spreadsheet note. Dealpuffin's go-to-market notes and agent tools docs are useful when you're deciding what an agent should call versus what you should ship as a plain page.

Frequently asked questions

Will I be charged for AI Search in November 2026?

No. Per Cloudflare's changelog, you will not be charged for AI Search usage before December 1, 2026.

Did the price go up because of the delay?

No. Cloudflare says pricing and included usage are unchanged. The date moved; the rate card did not.

Can I still sync more often than every 24 hours?

Yes. The default is 24 hours. You can still choose any supported interval from 15 minutes to 24 hours in instance settings or with sync_interval in the API.

Does this affect other Cloudflare AI products?

This changelog is about AI Search billing and its default sync interval. Check Cloudflare's product-specific docs for anything else you use.
