Connect Stripe

Coupons come from your Stripe account. Dealpuffin never asks for a secret key, and Stripe is not a way to sign in.

Create the restricted key

  1. In the Stripe Dashboard, open Developers, then API keys.
  2. Create a restricted key.
  3. Turn on read for Coupons and Promotion codes.
  4. Turn on read for Products if you want product ids to come back with names.
  5. Copy the key. It starts with rk_live_ or rk_test_.

Paste it on the Stripe page. Dealpuffin checks that the key can read coupons, encrypts it, and runs the first import. You only see a hint of the key after that (the last characters), plus whether it is live or test mode, and the last sync time.

Use a live key for coupons you want real early adopters to redeem. A test key only talks to Stripe test mode.

What the key can and cannot do

The key is read-only. It imports coupons and promotion codes. It does not create coupons, does not turn promotion codes on at checkout, and does not charge a card.

A read key cannot flip the payment-page setting that accepts promotion codes. If that setting is off in Stripe, a customer has nowhere to paste the code. Turn it on in your Checkout or payment page settings.

You can revoke the key in Stripe at any time. Replacing it on the Stripe page stores the new key and syncs again.

What is stored

The plaintext key is not stored. The connection keeps an encrypted ciphertext, a nonce, a short hint, live or test mode, and last_synced_at. Sync uses the stored key. It does not publish anything. See Sync and publish.
